PC networks have developed considerably since the first ethernet and token ring networks were implemented in the late 1980s. Today the technology is reliable and robust; fast ethernet networks when cabled and configured correctly typically operate with very few issues.

The area that now attracts most focus is how to secure that network from attack from outside. The simple solution used to be "do not allow outside access to the network", this is rarely a practical solution as working practices continue to evolve. There is no reason why necessary outside access to the business resources cannot be achieved in a secure manner.
